VERONA: IN SEARCH OF WONDERS
Verona is not a large city, but it has a wealth of heritage. One of the most famous love stories ever told is set here, making it the quintessential city of love. It is also a treasure-box of culture, encapsulating over 2,000 years of history in just over 200 square kilometres. Probably its most familiar treasure is the love story that we mentioned, William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Juliet’s house is one of the most famous sights in the city, with its legendary balcony visible from the internal courtyard, viewed by hundreds of thousands of visitors every year. Also world-famous is the Arena, the Roman amphitheatre in Piazza Bra, a symbol of the city whose history runs back to the 1st century A.D. Originally built for performances that included gladiator combats, today it is familiar for its concerts and operas, which benefit from the excellent acoustics and good visibility from all parts of the seating.
A walk in the city centre is an evocative experience that reveals many other historic sights, some running back to the rule of the Scaligeri family in the 13th and 14th centuries, such as Palazzo di Cangrande, also known as Palazzo del Podestà, the Renaissance-style Loggia di Fra Giocondo, Palazzo di Cansignorio with its 14th-century tower, and Palazzo della Ragione, one of the most distinctive buildings in the city, between Piazza dei Signori and Piazza delle Erbe. The latter square is a favourite meeting-point in the city, ideal for enjoying a coffee, lunch or an evening drink. Other highlights include the Cathedral, the Basilica di Santa Anastasia and the Ancient Roman theatre. An unmissable viewpoint is the romantic, evocative scene offered by the Castelvecchio Bridge, reconstruction of a 14th-century fortified bridge over the River Adige.
