THE MOST SERENE REPUBLIC BEGINS THE NEW YEAR IN A MASK
Magic and poetry, together once again in the city whose Carnival, one of the finest and most glittering in the world, takes place on the water. The combination of colours, joy, tradition, history, performance and costumes creates an unforgettable experience. Its origins run back to the 11th century, though it attained its distinctive visual characteristics in the 18th century. This year, the Most Serene Republic dons its mask from 27 January to 13 February. Just as for every edition, thousands of visitors will be there, ready to enjoy the unique occasion. The city is transformed by decorations and lighting, and it hosts a packed programme of events. As many of you are aware, “A Gentleman values memorable moments,” and so the Venice Carnival deserves to be placed in the spotlight. For this reason, Boggi Milano is giving it the space that it merits.
On 27 January, a series of floating stages will set the scene for a special performance on the canal at Rio di Cannaregio, presenting a spectacular sequence of visual imagery accompanied by aquatic background music. However the official celebrations will begin on 4 February with the unmissable “Flight of the Angel,” a sight that is so emotionally charged that it will take your breath away. This year’s angel, who will fly from the top of the San Marco belltower down to the centre of Piazza San Marco, will be – in compliance with tradition – the girl who was proclaimed the most beautiful Maria in the preceding edition of the Carnival, held in 2017.
Even before this, from 3 February and right through to the end of Carnival, the fine Renaissance palace Ca’ Vendramin Calergi – home to famous composer Richard Wagner on several occasions – will be the venue for some of the most exclusive events in Italy and the world: a series of sumptuous gala dinner dances. Gentlemen, if you wish to take part, it is important to remember that the required dress code is – as you can imagine – to be masked. Banality is not part of the Boggi Milano world, and in the same way it could never be part of an evening of this type: an incredible experience that combines the pleasure of memorable food with art, performance, glamour, live music and DJ-sets.
There are all sorts of events in the Carnival programme. However, from 3 February, highlights are without doubt the daily “Competition for the finest mask.” The winners of the competition held on the days from 8 to 10 February will take part in the finals on 11 February, which will crown two winners: one for the most beautiful mask, and one for the best costume on the official theme.
The Carnival ends with another unmissable event, “Lo svolo del Leon”, the flight of the lion which for centuries has been the emblem of Venice, queen of the seas and a city constructed on glory and hope. This is how Venice celebrates the winged lion of Saint Mark, symbol of power, majesty, wisdom and justice. The giant banner bearing the emblem will fly up and over the celebrating crowds, right up to its destination at the top of the belltower.
